South America is a enormous continent with many exciting and diverse ports of call. Cruise enthusiasts can visit South America from 2 oceans - the Atlantic, the Pacific, or the Caribbean. The continent can be a long flight, but covers only three time zones. Sometimes cruisers visit South America on their way to Antarctica for a cruise.
The traditional ports-of-call on a passenger cruise are Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, Ushuaia, Valparaiso/Santiago, Puerto Madryn, Pisco and Manta. They are, of course, not all, but nonetheless, very popular ones on the South American cruise line routes. Usually the Caribbean has long been a favorite cruising locale, but when it is winter in the northern hemisphere, a cruise in South American waters certainly appeals.
Besides escaping winter cold, you may find new adventures on a cruise, either a short or extended one, from October through March/April. There are often special deals offered for Christmas and New Year, for Carnival and to fill empty staterooms.
